Lawson Peak
A popular hiking destination. Carry your rope up the one hour uphill slog and be rewarded with good climbing. There are a few bolted leads—traditional run-outs—and a few top-ropes to be had. With an extreme 4WD vehicle you can drive nearly to the base of the cliffs. Lawson Peak is located within the Descanso District of the Cleveland National Forest.
Directions: From San Diego, head east on I-8 to the highway 79 exit, go south on Japatul Road approximately 5 miles. Take Lyons Valley Road for another 4 to 5 miles and park on the right at a rough dirt road entrance. Lawson’s is at the top of this road, approximately 2 miles.
