El Cajon Mountain

El Cajon Mountain El Cajon Mountain is a multi pitch front-country sport climbing area with views of the ocean. This area is located close to San Diego proper, just outside of Lakeside, near El Cap ‘Mountain’ and El Cap Reservoir. El Cajon Mountain is an easily accessible climbing destination (all roads are paved), and the area offers a significant amount and wide range of route grades (from beginner to expert)—however, expect 1+ to 2 hour uphill approaches. Most descents are accomplished via rappels (two ropes are advised). El Cajon Mountain is located within the Descanso District of the Cleveland National Forest.

Directions: From San Diego, head east on I-8, north on Highway 67. Take Mapleview Street east to El Monte Road north. At approximately 5.5 miles El Monte County Park comes up on the right. Parking can be found another 1/4 to 1/2 mile further (if you come to a gate turn around, park on the north side). Look for a trail that heads across a riparian area toward the obvious formations to the north.
