Access Issues

New Sign at Mission Trails
ACSD and Mission Trails Regional Park have teamed up to replace some unclear signage along the Climbers' Loop Trail within the park. These signs now indicate where climbers may access routes, while prohibiting general hiking in the area. Projects like these help strengthen ACSD's relationships with local land managers, while clarifying access issues for the local climbing community.

Several San Diego climbing areas have had seasonal raptor nesting closures lifted. All Cleveland National Forest climbing areas including Corte Madera, Eagle Peak, and Glenn Cliff are all fully open after a successful raptor nesting season. These closures only affect portions of the crag, and these sections change somewhat each year depending on where birds chose to nest. Check back for regular updates on climbing access. Corte Madera and Eagle Peak may have seasonal closures beginning in early 2012, dependent on nesting activity. Climb on!

San Jacinto Snow Creek Access
In recent years, conflicts between recreational users and the Desert Water Agency (DWA) have escalated on and around the DWA land known as Section 33. Section 33 sits at the base of the magnificent North Face of San Jacinto in the Snow Creek drainage - home to the premiere alpine climb in Southern California. Local climbers have drafted a letter co-signed by the Access Fund and ACSD, publicly expressing the recreational community's plan to continue to legally visit public lands in the area, avoiding private land, and encouraging leave-no-trace ethics and human waste disposal using wag bags. In return, it asks that the DWA stop harassing climbers on public land, adequately mark property boundaries to help climbers avoid trespassing unintentionally. We're confident that we will be able to re-open dialogue on these issues and resolve some of the conflicts occurring between recreational users and the DWA. We'll be sure to keep ACSD members up to speed on developments and anything they can do to help. For more information on Snow Creek, come to this month's member meeting at Callahan's, where local climbers Chris Manzuk and Matt Jordon will give a presentation on how to access the area legally.

Volunteer Opportunities

Donations Needed for the ACSD Annual Celebration
It's that time of year again - the ACSD 2011 Annual Celebration date is quickly approaching and we need to round up funding to support the event or some quality SWAG to raffle and auction off at the event. All of our prizes and auction items come from generous donations and we need your help in getting them. If you have a connection to a climbing-related, or non-climbing company that would be interested in supporting our cause, please pass on this letter and a good word for our cause. Because we'll also be sending out letters to companies, please send an email to rschlocker@alliedclimbers.org to let us know what company you're contacting so we know you've got them covered.

What else is new?

CNF Recognizes Climbing
The CNF now officially recognizing rock climbing on their "Recration" page. No content is up yet, but we have offered to help develop content.
Check out the CNF Recreation page.
Member Slideshows
We love it when ACSD members cap off our meetings with a slideshow about a recent expedition they've been on. If you've got one you'd like to share, let us know at akimmerly@alliedclimbers.org.
